ON Semiconductor Heads Into Earnings With AI Optimism Priced In
ON Semiconductor reports Q2 results Monday after the bell. The stock has rallied 57% year to date on AI power optimism, but valuation and margin questions linger.

ON Semiconductor (NASDAQ:ON) will report second-quarter earnings after the market closes on Monday, August 3. The analog chip maker enters the print with the stock up 57.04% year to date, according to a Yahoo Finance analysis, and a forward P/E of 18.79 based on current consensus estimates. That valuation sits well below the trailing P/E of 60.01, implying investors are betting on a sharp earnings acceleration.
The market's enthusiasm tracks a broader AI infrastructure trade. ON makes power management and sensing chips used in data centers, electric vehicles, and industrial equipment. As hyperscalers pour capital into AI data centers, demand for efficient power conversion has grown, and ON has positioned itself as a supplier to that buildout. A recent comparison on Yahoo Finance argued ON may be the better AI infrastructure stock than Vertiv for investors seeking exposure to physical AI and robotics, though it noted Vertiv suits those expecting upside in hyperscaler spending.
Analysts remain moderately optimistic. A Yahoo Finance headline ahead of the print said ON possesses the right combination of the two key ingredients for a likely earnings beat. Another noted expectations for higher year-over-year earnings and revenue, with estimates pointing to increased optimism around the near-term profit outlook. The company's revenue growth over the trailing twelve months stands at 4.7%, and its gross margin is 42.67%, according to OpenBB data.
What the numbers show
ON's financial profile, drawn from SEC filings and market data, shows a company in transition. Revenue per share is $15, and the enterprise value sits at $32.84 billion, or 5.42 times revenue. The balance sheet carries a debt-to-equity ratio of 44.34%, and the current ratio is 4.87, indicating ample liquidity. Return on equity is 7.49%, and the profit margin is 9.46%.
The company's share count has been shrinking. According to SEC filings, ON had 391.9 million shares outstanding as of April 29, 2026, down from 402.4 million at the end of October 2025 and 408.97 million at the end of July 2025. That buyback activity has helped support earnings per share even as revenue growth remains modest.
Public float data from the SEC shows the market's changing perception of ON. As of July 4, 2025, the aggregate market value of non-affiliate held common equity was $23.2 billion. Two years earlier, at the end of June 2023, that figure was $40.7 billion. The stock has since recovered, but the float value remains below the 2023 peak.
Risks and the bear case
Not everyone is convinced the rally is sustainable. A Yahoo Finance article on July 29 noted that ON stock settled at $84.39, down 5.22% on the day, and flagged severe negative order flow. An options trade analysis suggested contrarians might see a bounce-back opportunity, but it warned of huge dangers from the negative flow.
Valuation is a sticking point. The trailing P/E of 60.01 reflects depressed earnings, and the forward multiple of 18.79 assumes a dramatic improvement. If ON delivers results that merely meet expectations, the stock could be vulnerable to profit taking after such a strong run. The 1-day return of 2.57% cited in one analysis shows how quickly sentiment can shift.
ON's beta of 2.01 means it moves roughly twice as much as the market, amplifying both upside and downside. The company's overall risk score from OpenBB is 2 out of 10, but shareholder rights risk is 6, and audit risk is 5, suggesting governance concerns that some investors may weigh.
What to watch in the report
Beyond revenue and EPS, investors should focus on gross margin. ON's gross margin of 42.67% is solid for analog chips, but any sequential decline could signal pricing pressure or mix shifts. Operating margin is 18.23%, and EBITDA margin is 33.78%, leaving room for operating leverage if revenue accelerates.
Guidance will matter more than the quarter itself. The market has priced in a strong AI-driven recovery, so management's commentary on data center demand, automotive weakness, and inventory levels will set the tone for the rest of the year. A cautious outlook could undo the year's gains quickly.
The earnings call is scheduled for Monday after the bell. Investors will be listening for how much of ON's growth is tied to AI versus traditional auto and industrial end markets, and whether the company can sustain its margin trajectory while investing in new capacity.
