Micron's 27% Sell-Off Tests Bull Case as Record Profits Meet AI Uncertainty
Micron Technology's sharp share-price decline has renewed questions over the sustainability of the memory industry's boom. While management expects supply constraints and long-term customer agreements to support earnings through 2027, investors remain focused on whether AI-driven demand can offset the next supply cycle. With the stock trading at a low forward earnings multiple despite record profitability, the pullback has reopened the debate over valuation.

Micron Technology's shares have fallen more than 27% over the past month, prompting investors to reassess whether the sharp decline represents a buying opportunity or the beginning of a broader slowdown.
Despite the recent sell-off, the company's share price remains substantially higher on a year-to-date basis, reflecting a dramatic improvement in its underlying financial performance. The rally has been supported by rapid growth in revenue, profitability and cash generation rather than speculative enthusiasm.
Record Financial Performance
In its most recently reported quarter, Micron generated revenue of $41.5 billion, more than four times the $9.3 billion reported in the same period a year earlier.
Management attributed the strength to robust demand and highlighted multi-year strategic customer agreements that it believes will improve the durability and predictability of future financial performance.
During the earnings call, executives said the pricing structures embedded in those agreements include negotiated ranges. Even at the lower end of those pricing bands, management expects profit margins to remain well above the company's previous cycle peak, suggesting confidence that profitability can remain elevated even if pricing moderates.
Profitability reached record levels during the quarter. Operating income increased to $33.3 billion from $2.2 billion a year earlier, while the operating margin expanded to 80.4%, marking the highest level in the company's history.
Supply Outlook Remains Key
The primary concern for investors is the sustainability of these exceptional margins.
The memory industry has historically been highly cyclical, with pricing driven by periods of supply shortages followed by oversupply. Management stated that industry supply is expected to remain constrained through the remainder of 2026 and likely into 2027.
However, new manufacturing capacity is expected to begin coming online starting in 2028, potentially increasing industry supply and placing downward pressure on pricing.
Micron is also expanding its own manufacturing footprint. During the third quarter of fiscal 2026, the company invested approximately $7.1 billion in capital expenditures, largely directed toward new fabrication facilities. Additional production capacity is scheduled to come online beginning in 2027, with further expansion planned through 2030.
The company is simultaneously investing in next-generation memory technologies aimed at improving product performance and maintaining its competitive position.
Strong Near-Term Guidance
Micron's outlook suggests momentum is continuing.
For the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026, management forecast revenue of approximately $50 billion alongside gross margins of roughly 86%.
If achieved, revenue would increase approximately 25% sequentially while gross margin would improve from the prior quarter's 84.6%. Assuming operating expenses remain relatively stable, operating margins could expand further.
Valuation Appears Undemanding
The recent decline has compressed Micron's valuation despite rapidly growing earnings.
Based on forward earnings estimates referenced in the analysis, the shares trade at approximately 5.3 times forward earnings—a multiple below many mature telecommunications companies that have little expected long-term growth.
The investment thesis argues that while Micron remains a cyclical business, structural demand drivers could support stronger long-term growth than in previous industry cycles.
Long-Term Cash Flow Thesis
The valuation case relies heavily on expectations for sustained free cash flow growth.
The discounted cash flow model presented in the analysis estimates intrinsic value at approximately $1,487 per share versus a market price near $820.
The model assumes free cash flow of approximately:

$116 billion in 2027
$147 billion in 2028
$125 billion in 2029
After the expected cyclical decline in 2029, free cash flow is projected to resume growing, reaching roughly $397 billion by 2035.
AI Infrastructure Could Reshape Demand
The long-term bullish outlook is based on the belief that artificial intelligence infrastructure is fundamentally changing memory demand.
Large technology companies are expected to invest hundreds of billions of dollars annually in AI data centers. As those facilities are built and later upgraded, they could create a recurring replacement cycle for high-performance memory and storage products.
Historically, data centers represented a relatively small portion of Micron's overall demand. The thesis argues that AI infrastructure could make this segment a significantly larger and more durable contributor to future revenue.
Investment View
Although uncertainty surrounding AI, semiconductor competition and future memory pricing has contributed to recent volatility, the combination of record profitability, strong near-term guidance and a compressed valuation supports a constructive long-term outlook.
Under the assumptions presented in this analysis, the recent share-price decline represents an attractive entry point for long-term investors who believe AI-driven infrastructure spending will sustain elevated demand for memory over the coming decade.
